When the day of caroling arrives, the robots will make their festive debut in Thessaloniki. The goal of the team that programmed them is to enhance the magic of Christmas.
A group of robots in Thessaloniki is taking on a Christmas role and has already begun rehearsals. Nova, Mini, Pepper, Nao, Billy Billy, and the other small and large robots do not need triangles or other musical instruments to sing “Good evening, lords” and “New year, new life.”
When the day of caroling arrives, they will ask the familiar question, “Shall we sing?” and make their debut without even expecting money or sweets. These special carolers are the result of a robotics team that had the idea, as its members say, to enhance the magic of Christmas rather than replace it.
“The goal is only to bring joy and spread the magic of the holidays. They will not take the place of children, who wait every year for carols to fill their piggy banks and more. Through the voices of the robots, we want to enhance the magic of Christmas, not replace it,” notes Asterios Ikas, president of ORTEM HELLAS.
The managers of this robotics company from Thessaloniki are collaborating with municipalities, schools, and businesses. The members of the festive robotics group that have been programmed to sing carols have taken on different roles.
“I’m Pepper, Santa’s official assistant.”
“I’m Pepper, Santa’s official robotic assistant for the holiday season! Don’t worry, the real Santa is in his place, making all the preparations and loading the sleigh. I’m just helping him with the technology.” This is what one of the little robots says, wearing his Santa hat.
“First, we transformed the well-known and beloved Pepper into… another Santa Claus. Or rather, so as not to confuse the real one, let’s say he has assistant duties. He helps the beloved Saint not to get lost, as he has an extremely up-to-date, state-of-the-art GPS so that he can reach all the children and all locations,” notes Mr. Ikas.
He adds: “He explains—even though he doesn’t eat melomakarona—everything about their secrets, while urging Santa not to eat any more kourabiedes! It has been designed in such a way that in the future it will be able to talk about Christmas traditions, customs from each region, and festive destinations throughout the country.”
The goal, as its creators point out, remains the same: to make everyone smile, wherever they are, just like Santa Claus does. The robots will be ready for New Year’s Day, as they are already being tested. When children see them, they hug them with love and lots of smiles.
